FAES Foundation publishes issue 60 of its journal Cuadernos de Pensamiento Político, directed by Javier Zarzalejos. Among other topics, the articles analyze the repercussions of the new North American policy for the defense and security of Europe and Northern Atlantic; the relationship that can be established between policy and law; regional educational inequalities in Spain; the keys to the economic slowdown and the uncertainties it generates; and the crisis of liberal democracy and its necessary survival.

Ana Belén Perianes, PhD in International Peace and Security, recalls in 'La UE frente a la incertidumbre de Trump' (The EU facing Trump’s uncertainty) that the European Union has declared its determination to maintain the Nuclear Agreement with Iran, in opposition to Washington. This analysis highlights the political and economic repercussions of the American turn for European defence and security, and the new geostrategic reality that Brussels will have to face after the post-Brexit period. Expanding the focus on 'Las relaciones transatlánticas en la era Trump' (Transatlantic relations in the Trump era), International Relations professor Juan Tovar is confident that the current discrepancies between the US and Europe, including trade, are no more than one of the recurrent historical episodes in relations that are fundamental for both Europe and the US.

In 'Políticas y derecho' (Politics and Law), by Professor José J. Jiménez Sánchez, he reflects on whether politics should be subordinated to the law or the other way around. He points out that, in a democratic state governed by the rule of law, the determination of the general will corresponds to the majority, which is arrived at by the sum of individual wills. Both politics, exercised by citizens, and law, which recognizes their individual freedoms and rights, are fundamental.

The issue also pays attention to the educational differences between the Spanish Autonomous Communities in the article 'Educación y desigualdades regionales en España' (Education and regional inequalities in Spain), by Doctor of Philosophy Jaime A. Foces Gil, which addresses the insufficient cohesion mechanisms of the national education system and concludes with the need to establish active long-term policies to remedy it.

Cuadernos 60 also echoes the dialogue 'Desaceleración económica: incertidumbres y claves' (Economic slowdown: uncertainties and keys) between Fernando Fernández (IE), Pedro A. Merino (Repsol) and Miguel Marín (FAES). A conversation to unravel the doubts surrounding the Spanish economy: at what point in the economic cycle we are, what is the response of economic policy (taxes, public spending) and what can we expect in the future.

CRISIS OF THE LIBERAL ORDER
The always complex relations between Great Britain and the other European nations, presided by the principle of the balance of power, are the object of the analysis of José Ruiz Vicioso, holder of a master’s degree in History of Political Thought. In 'Más allá del Brexit: El debate sobre Europa en la política británica' (Beyond Brexit: The Debate on Europe in British Politics) he affirms that Brexit is one more episode in this historical process.

Journalist and writer Pedro F. Barbadillo signs 'El capitalismo alimenta a los rusos' (Capitalism feeds the Russians), an article about the effects that the privatization of land has had on Russia's economy, now the world's leading wheat exporter.

The magazine also includes the interventions of Josef Joffe and Nicolas Baverez in the FAES-UCM 2018 Summer Course, in which both warned of the difficulties and threats facing the liberal international order and the democratic state today. In the first, 'La crisis del orden liberal internacional' (The crisis of the international liberal order), the editor of the German weekly Die Zeit warns that the growing 'iliberalism' imposes "a zero-sum game: I win if you lose". French writer, for his part, speaks in 'La vigencia de la democracia liberal' (The validity of liberal democracy) about the need for citizens to preserve the attachment to freedom and democracy and take responsibility for them.

CUADERNO DE CULTURA
Finally, the cultural section of the issue celebrates the centenary of the publication of Oswald Spengler's The decline of the West, one of the most important milestones in cultural history. The analyst Antonio R. Rubio Plo reviews the work of the German thinker and the effects of nationalism and culture understood as part of a life cycle. The section contains a second article by Fernando R. Genovés, 'La cadena del lenguaje' (The chain of language), on political correctness and the use of language as a weapon of manipulation and confrontation.
