Closing for the II Foro #IDEASFAES Valencia José María Aznar: "What happened in Catalonia is a period in itself, a full-fledged rebellion"

05/04/2018

    –        "Nationalism has thrown overboard the efforts of decades of developing self-government, of national political intervention."

    –        "The game has changed in Catalonia and in the rest of Spain and anyone who ignores it will come up against a very solid reality: Spain exists as a nation of citizens who are not willing to question its historical continuity and its future of common coexistence".

    –        "The desire for a turnaround will not be fulfilled."

    –        "There is no room for supposing good faith in appeals to dialogue, nor is it possible to speak of dialogue with those who have led the rebellion."

    –        "Catalonia needs the remedies of the law and the encouragement of a broad political alternative to independence. And that requires politicians with generosity and leadership."

    –        "This moment of special seriousness tests the soundness of the constitutional structure and the attitudes of those of us who want to continue with it"

    –        "Independence nationalism has created with populists and revisionists a destructive amalgam for Catalonia itself, but one that aspires to reproduce wherever conditions are created for it".

    –        "Nationalism is acting as a catalyst for a strategy of destabilisation to destroy the Constitution, and in that strategy Catalan independence clearly targets the Valencian Community".

    –        Today the Valencian Community is crucial for the future of Spain. And as we know, as do those who want to break it."

    –        It says that political, institutional and social assets must be strengthened not only in the institutions but also in civil society

    –        "Nationalism is confronted with democratic citizenship and an uncompromising determination to defend what belongs to all"

    –        The fact that the Spanish society is responding with a national sense to the challenge of independence does not mean that a prospect of constitutional and civic normality for Catalonia has come to an end and cannot be foreseen".

The former President of the Government and President of FAES Foundation, José María Aznar, stated today that "what has happened in Catalonia is a full-blown rebellion. Nationalism has tossed aside the efforts of decades of developing self-government, of engaging in the great national project of common life that is Spain. That is why, he said, "there is no place to assume good faith in appeals to dialogue, nor is it possible to speak of dialogue with those who have led the rebellion".

In his view, "the desire for a return to the previous situation will not be fulfilled. The game has changed in Catalonia and in the rest of Spain, and anyone who ignores this change will come up against a very sound reality: Spain exists as a nation of citizens and they are not willing to question its historical continuity and its future of common coexistence". For Aznar, "Catalonia needs the remedy of the law and the encouragement of a broad political alternative to independence. And that also requires politicians who believe in that goal and make it a reality with generosity and leadership.

DESTABILISATION STRATEGY
During his speech at the 2nd IDEASFAES Valencia Forum, Aznar said that "independence nationalism has created an amalgam of populists and revisionists that is both damaging to Catalonia and destructive, but which aims to reproduce it wherever conditions are conducive to it". "Nationalism is acting as a catalyst for a strategy of destabilization to destroy the Constitution of all. And in this strategy, the expansionist design of Catalan independence clearly targets the Valencian Community", he stressed.

Aznar pointed out that the Valencian Community is today crucial for the future of Spain, "and in the same way that we know, those who want to break the State know it". In the light of this, he said, "this Community must strengthen all its political, institutional and social assets, and this must be done by the institutions, but also by civil society".

THINKING ABOUT SPAIN
"Spain is also strengthened by thinking about it", said Aznar in this meeting on nationalist pressure in the Valencian Community. "Political action has to be based on sound ideas - if possible, good ones - if it is to respond to a long-lasting project for the welfare and improvement of the country," he added. In this sense, the former President of the Government has assured that FAES Foundation is not here to draw up "apocalyptic portraits", because these "would not render justice to the capacity demonstrated by Spanish society to face up to the difficulties".

"This is a very serious moment in which the soundness of our constitutional structure and the attitudes of those who want to continue living in it are being tested," he stressed.
